International cycle route EuroVelo 11, also known as the East Europe Route, is one of the major long-distance cycle routes linking the north of Europe with the south. Its total planned length is approximately 6,550 km, running from Nordkapp in Norway to Athens in Greece. It also passes through Slovakia the Prešov Region and in the Šariš region, it links several major towns, villages and tourist destinations.
In the Šariš region, the route runs on a north-south axis through the area around Lipany, Sabinov, Veľký Šariš and Prešov. According to the planned route in the Prešov Region, it also passes through villages and towns such as Krivany, Lipany, Rožkovany, Jakubova Voľa, Červenica, Pečovská Nová Ves, Sabinov, Ražňany, Ostrovany, Šarišské Michaľany, Veľký Šariš and Prešov. As a result, it connects the foothill landscape Čergova featuring the historic towns and cultural monuments of Šariš.
For cyclists, it is the combination of comfortable cycling, scenic views and the opportunity to take detours to interesting places that makes the area particularly attractive. Around Lipany, there are views of the Čergov Mountains and the countryside below Kamenický Castle. In Sabinov, the historic centre of the former free royal town is a highlight. Near Veľký Šariš, Šariš Castle is a striking landmark, whilst Prešov boasts the city’s monuments and the amenities of a regional capital.
From Čergov’s perspective, EuroVelo 11 is an important starting point for excursions into the foothills. From the route, you can continue towards Drienica and Lysá, to viewing towers, forest cycle routes, trails and hiking paths. EuroVelo 11 is therefore not just a transit cycle route in the Šariš region, but also a practical link between towns, villages and the natural landmarks of the Čergov Mountains.
