Sabinov town centre, Slovakia

The Historic Centre of Sabinov

The historic centre of Sabinov was designated as heritage area. Parts of the bastions and a section of the rampart wall have been preserved. The building of the Evangelical Lyceum – which later became the Piarist Grammar School – in the centre of Freedom Square is also a listed building. Thirty town houses surrounding Freedom Square are subject to heritage protection.

Landmarks of the conservation area

Among the main attractions are Church of St John the Baptist - a three-nave Gothic cathedral. The vaults of the choir and the chapel were completed in 1503 by the Košice master Mikuláš Krompholz. The high altar and some of the sculptures are from the workshop of Master Pavol of Levoča (the original altar is in Budapest). Church of the Virgin Mary It is a chapel in the cemetery, originally built in the Gothic style in 1375. It was extended in 1484 and given a Baroque makeover in the 17th century. From 1740 to 1920, it served as a church for the Piarist Order. Two Protestant churches were built outside the city walls at the beginning of the 19th century as ‘tolerance churches’ without towers. Greek Catholic Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Built in 1901, it was designated a diocesan place of pilgrimage in 1999.

The value of Sabinov’s almost perfectly preserved medieval town layout is enhanced by a belt of town fortifications. Their construction dates back to the 15th century. Some sections of the wall remain to this day; two bastions have been reconstructed and four are almost completely destroyed. The remains of the southern gate were uncovered in front of the district office building.
At the town cemetery, you will find the impressive tombs of notable figures such as Bohuš Nosák-Nezábudov – a poet – and Jolana Cirbusováprose writer, Stenhura E. – painter.
