The Balážka Lookout Tower

Mountain range Balažka in the town Lipany (643 m above sea level) is interesting from several points of view. Beneath the railway embankment in the Balažka-Štrembroch area, there used to be an old Jewish cemetery. Its establishment can be attributed to the arrival of the first Jews from Polish Galicia around 1813, and it remained in use until the end of the 19th century. Today, the original layout of the cemetery has not been preserved, but an information board has been erected to mark the site.

Hiking, the railway and the viewing tower on the Balážka massif

The massif is bordered by a railway line, which, in its eastern section, has divided the rock into what are known as „Malá skala“ and ‘Veľká skala’. This has resulted in two main walking routes. The Malá skala circular walk offers a view from the cross. Here you will find an Italian well, partisan trenches, a hunting hide and information boards. The Veľká skala circular trail follows the Balažka ridge; both trails are interconnected and have several junctions. In October 2019, the observation tower was officially opened – Balažka Lookout Tower, which is 14 metres high and offers the most beautiful view of the whole of Lipany and the surrounding hills.
