31, Hliník 200, 083 01 Sabinov, Slovakia

The observation tower on Šanca, 465 metres above sea level.

Above the town of Sabinov Šanec is closing. This is the name given to a wooded hillside right next to the Torysa river. Šanec is mainly used for recreation and, due to its proximity to the town (with access directly from the main road), it is a popular destination in every season. The foot of the hill can be reached via various paths; the routes are known as „The Švabľov Paths“. At the top there is a flat area where a ceremony was held in September 2020 to mark the opening of „The Šanca Lookout Tower“. The construction of the viewing tower was made possible thanks to financial support from the Office of the Government of the Slovak Republic, as a means of promoting tourism and enhancing the appeal of the suburban Švabľovka Forest Park.

The Šanca Lookout Tower and its surroundings

The observation tower stands at an altitude of 465 metres above sea level. The location and maximum height of the tower were restricted due to the proximity of Ražňany Airport, its safety zones and the need to ensure air traffic safety. The observation tower is 11m, has two storeys and a timber structure, built using state-of-the-art timber-working technology.

Near the tower, you’ll find a seating area offering a beautiful view of the entire Šariš region – from Šariš Castle Hill, Hradová, Zobrana and Malkovská Hůrka, through Makovica, Bodoň, Lysá, Čierna Hora and all the way to Šimonka.
